These astonishing spiders paralyze prey trapped in their webs with a powerful venom. Although their venom is 15 times more poisonous than a rattlesnake’s, their painful bites are usually not deadly to humans because they inject such a small amount. They are called widow spiders because the female eats the male after mating. Eating a black widow will normally not kill a small predator (birds, et cetera), but the sickness that follows digestion is enough for the creature to remember that the bright red marking means "do not to eat." Because the adult female black widow typically hangs and moves about its web belly upwards, its hourglass is on its front. Includes a 5-language educational hang tag.
